Felony (Criminal Court)
The Circuit Criminal Division hears major criminal (felony) cases where the resulting penalty can be imprisonment in a state penitentiary or death.
County Criminal Court
The County Court Criminal Division manages a spectrum of cases, encompassing criminal misdemeanor cases, criminal traffic offenses, violations of municipal and county ordinances, and civil traffic infractions. Criminal misdemeanor cases involve breaches of the law like petit theft, simple battery, and various other criminal offenses. On the other hand, criminal traffic matters pertain to motor vehicle violations, including driving with a suspended license, driving under the influence, and operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license.
Felony Mental Health and Drug Court
For the Felony Mental Health Court, the court services encompass competency restoration, case management, facilitation of connections to outpatient and residential mental health treatment, support in securing housing, therapy, and medication management. In certain cases, the court may also order defendants, when necessary, to receive forensic hospital care.
The Felony Drug Court collaborates closely with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Drug Court Program, the Broward Addiction Recovery Center, and other private service providers. Participants undergo assessments to identify their treatment needs and are subsequently offered suitable services, such as drug treatment, mental health services, trauma-informed care, assistance with transportation and housing, as well as interview and job training.
